  • Viruses and bacterial spores are complex structures with multilayer albumen coats, outer and inner membranes, cortex and core. In addition, bacteria have vegetative cells that actively grow and metabolize.
  • Bacillus subtilis var globigii bacterium cell is 30-40 nm; the cell wall is the strong structure with pore diameter of1 – 6 nm and inner osmotic pressure of ~ 25 – 30 atm.
  • Dental Bacteria (polysaccharide exopolymers), especially those produced by Streptococcus mutans, create bio-films that promote bacterial adhesion and accumulation as well as the formation of structured bacterial microcolonies on tooth surfaces.

Why is Plasma Activated Water So Effective at Sterilization?

The chemistry of PAW makes it an effective cleaner:


  • Small size of clusters
  • Active species with high sporicidal activity: OH; H; O
  • Highly reactive components: H2O2; ClO; HOCl; OCl-; Cl-, H+ etc.
  • High oxidation potential (+1100 mV) – steals electrons from the cell (oxidizing effect)
  • Dramatic reduction in pathogens & total elimination of bio-films


Lab Test: Plasma Activated Water versus Viruses!

BioVir Laboratories conducted a microbial challenge test on the effect of plasma activated water on pathogens. The challenge organisms used were  Polio, Rotavirus & Male Specific Coliphage Viruses.

Plasma activated water eliminated >99% of the pathogens!

Lab Test: Efficacy of PAW against Pathogens on Produce

Fresh produce samples, including tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries and cantaloupes, were inoculated by spraying with the following pathogens:

1.Listeria spp. (ATCC 33090,ATCC 15313, ATCC 19115) 2.Eschericha coli (ATCC 25922, ATCC8739, B6914) 3.Salmonella spp. (ATCC 8324, ATCC 14028, ATCC 25241) 4.Yeast and Mold (Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC 79, Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404) 

The produce was then soaked in 3 gallons of plain tap water that had been plasma activated to create a PH of less than 3. The produce samples were then analyzed for microbes. 

  

ALL THE PRODUCE SHOWED SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS OF PATHOGENS!


The laboratory’s conclusion based on these tests:

“The use of [plasma activated water] on fresh produce wash such as tomatoes, cantaloupes, strawberry and lettuce is effective in reducing Listeria spp., Eschericha coli, Salmonella spp., Yeast and Mold at different holding time. The average bacterial reduction is 3-4 logs and average fungal reduction is 2-3 logs.”


The plasma activated water worked best on smooth surfaced produce like the tomatoes and lettuce, but still reduced pathogens on the complex surfaces of the strawberries and canteloupes.

Plasma System Tested on Wastewater in Los Angeles CA

  

Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant is Los Angeles’ oldest and largest wastewater treatment facility; It is located in Playa del Rey and has been in operation since 1894.  Treatment processes include full secondary treatment, bio solids handling, and biogas generation. Our plasma team was invited to test the system on wastewater coming in to the plant. 


Using a previously clean and sterilized collection bucket; a sample of approximately 5 gallons of waste water were collected directly from the treatment stream prior to any standard treatment at the plant. A small amount of the collected waste water was reserved for control testing and the remainder was immediately treated in less than 5 minutes. No additional chemicals added to the waste water. The reserved water and the treated water were immediately transported after processing to the Hyperion in-house microbiologic lab to be tested for the specific microbiologic entities.
